AbiWord 2.4.5

What use is a Word Processor when you can't share your documents with your friends? AbiWord is able to read and write all industry standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages and many more. AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, memos, and so forth. AbiWord is unique among word processors in its drive to become a fully cross-platform word processor. Our source code is carefully written so that AbiWord will run on virtually any operating system with a minimum of time spent on porting. This combined with our support for internationalization (the ability to run AbiWord in many languages) gives AbiWord a massive potential user-base.

Aquamacs Emacs 1.9

Aquamacs is an easy-to-use, Mac-style Emacs for OS X
An Editor for Text, HTML, LaTeX, C++, Java, Python, Perl and more...
Aquamacs is an Aqua-native build of the powerful Emacs text editor. By "Aqua-native," we mean more than just the fact that this version of Emacs runs as a standard OS X application. Aquamacs features extensive customization that enables it to conform better with Apple's standard Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) than standard versions of the editor do.
Emacs is a text editor of legendary power and configurability, but it also has an enormously complex user interface. One advantage of it is: no matter what operating system you run Emacs on, you'll always get the same interface. The big problem: if you use a number of applications on your Mac, one of them is Emacs, you'll have to switch gears when you switch to Emacs.
Aquamacs is better. We support the standard Mac user interface that you've come to love. For instance, in addition to traditional Emacs shortcuts like C-x C-f (open a new file), Aquamacs understands Apple-O. Aquamacs behaves like a modern application on Mac (or Windows) when it comes to selecting, copying, pasting texts within Aquamacs or in between applications. Aquamacs offers nice, smooth fonts. Asian input methods work. It's easy to install and runs out-of-the box with no configuration. And all is built on GNU Emacs, so you can use your favorite Emacs packages!

Bean is powered by the same text engine as Apple's Text Edit, but it adds live word count and the ability to adjust printed margins. Lots of other features too. MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people. But sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That is Bean's niche. Bean is not a replacement for MS Word. It does not do footnotes or hierarchical styles. Further, it is only partially compatible with MS Word's .doc format. • License: Freeware • Author/Publisher: James Hoover • Modification Date: January 27, 2012 • Requirements: Mac OS X 10.5 or higher Home Page BibDesk 1.4 BibDesk is a graphical BibTeX-bibliography manager for Mac OS X. BibDesk is designed to help organize and use bibliographic databases in BibTeX .bib format. In addition to manual typing, BibDesk lets you drag & drop or cut & paste .bib files into the bibliographic database and automatically opens files downloaded from PubMed. BibDesk also keeps track of electronic copies of literature on your computer and allows for searching your database through several keys. BibDesk integrates well with TeX for creating citations and bibliographies. This integration includes a Citation search completion service, and drag & drop (cut & paste) support for adding citations to TeX files. • License: Freeware • Author/Publisher: Michael O. CMacTeX can be configured to work in an integrated fashion with the popular Macintosh editors BBEdit, TextWrangler and Alpha. Here is a brief snippet of how Kevin describes Aspell on his web site: Aspell is an Open Source spell checker designed to eventually replace Ispell. Its main feature is that it does a much better job of coming up with possible suggestions than Ispell does. In fact recent tests shows that it even does better than Microsoft Word 97's spell checker or just about any other spell checker I have seen. It also has support for checking (La)TeX and HTML files, and run time support for other non English languages. By default the cocoAspell package comes only with the English dictionary that contains American, British, and Canadian variations. To spell check a document in another language you may have to download, compile, and install the corresponding spelling dictionary. • License: Freeware • Author/Publisher: Anton Leuski • Modification Date: December 24, 2009 • Requirements: Mac OS X 10.5 or higher Home Page CopyWrite 2.297 CopyWrite is a project manager for writers of all kinds. Rather than focus on formatting and layout, CopyWrite stands apart in its project-oriented approach. Word processors and page layout tools are good at what they do - formatting and layout - but they offer no help at all to a writer during the creative process. In fact, the 'gee-whiz' features crammed into these tools do more to hinder writers, getting in the way of their work flow. Put simply, these tools constipate writers; CopyWrite is like a tasty bran muffin ... with extra bran. • License: Shareware,$25

I wrote this program to fit the way I write. More specifically, I wrote it to help overcome my shortcomings. It would be terribly presumptuous to think that anyone else out there faces the same obstacles I do when I write, but it would also be presumptuous to think that I was the only one in the world with these problems. So I offer what I created to make me a better writer, hoping that it will help others too. This program is all about momentum, and reducing the number of things that break the flow when I am writing. Jer's Novel Writer is designed to help me keep writing when the creative juices are flowing, and then find all the things I need to go over again when I am more in a nitty-gritty mood. • License: Shareware,$30

LaTeX Equation Editor 1.3

Double-click the Equation Editor icon to launch the program. Once it has launched, enter the following into the main text box:
\sum_{i=0}^{n} {n \choose i} = 2^n
Click the "LaTeX" button to typeset the equation. If all has gone well, a graphic should appear in the blank area above the main text box.
To insert the equation into Keynote, just drag it. To save the equation as a PDF file, either drag the graphic to the Desktop (or some other folder), or click on "Export..." under the File menu. Dragging the equation to the Desktop or a folder will create a PDF file named "image-NNN.pdf" where NNN is replaced by a numeric index. If you would like something a bit more descriptive, rename the file or use Export..., as that allows you to specify a different name for the file.

Tofu 2.0.1

Tofu is... different. It is a novel application to address the common problem that people don't like reading text on the screen. Why is that anyway? I believe there are two main reasons: line width and visual instability. Text is usually very wide on the screen, which makes going from the end of one line to the beginning of the next difficult. That's why newspapers have narrow columns: It makes them faster to read. So why not just take a normal window and make it narrower, scrolling down as you need? Well, there are usually a lot of lines in a text, and all look more or less the same, so if they move past your eyes vertically, they are difficult to keep track of. The text doesn't feel stable, and you get lost easily. In Tofu, text is arranged in columns, and each column is only as high as your window. So lines are nice and narrow, they don't move about vertically, plus your text is now in easy-to-digest chunks. You just scroll from column to column horizontally, and feel more in control. Tofu also includes some other useful features to make reading easier for you. You can jump to any point in your text by simply typing some letters near it (without choosing any command first). There's a system-wide Service so you can, for example, grab some text from a web page. And it lets you use your voice to navigate text, so you can literally sit back and read.
